Maybe I’m missing something, but why do you need a POS system to run an online store? I read your post a few times and I don’t get it (and I run an online store…). I’m not trying to bust on your post, I’m really just asking. I’ll look out for your reply.

I have worked for about a dozen different companies that didn’t use POS software and at least half of them went out of business within the first 5 years of doing business. It just makes sense to have it if your going to be in retail.

    [ # 7087 ] Comment from Daniel [July 19, 2008, 3:20 am]

I can understand the reason why an online store would require a POS system to help manage the overall recording etc… I’ve just got a curious question.

When you say a POS software system, will the system be running on your own server? like any other script, or will it be an external piece of software that will run from the company that issues you the software and you just link to it?

The reason why I ask this question is simple, in my opinion it’s much much less secure if everyone was to run the POS system on their own server.

If someone finds a bug in the software and tries to use it to exploit the system, even if there is a patch available not everyone actually patches the software immediately some might not even bother. If it’s a central system the company offering the software doesn’t even have to inform the clients as of the update, just updates the system for everyone and moves on…

    [ # 7199 ] Comment from tanya [April 2, 2009, 4:14 pm]

The POS is really helpful for any online business. Ive seen others use it and it helped them keep everything in order. They also used something called the Glyphius Copy writing software (copyoracle.com) to help them with their advertisements. Ive seen a few other things too but it seems to work well for them.

I understand the idea behind utilizing a POS system, but now many shopping carts are equipping easy tools to utilize that will convert to quickbooks and track inventory. I really would only see needing a POS if you are looking to create both an online and offline storefront.

Hello,I have been using OsCommerce. Its an online store which has some addon’s to use POS. Otherwise you can visit http://www.hotscripts.com and search for POS. It will give you 1000’s of softwares. 50% of them are free.Thank you.

    [ # 7326 ] Comment from web design preston [December 6, 2009, 6:46 pm]

I agree with comment #7312 but many open source apps such a cs-cart, magento allow you to place orders for the customers in the backend. If you looking for a cheaper option then this should be the answer.
